The Mixed Dozen

While we sit in the depths of Winter (watching some Aussies enjoy themselves overseas!), now is the time to plan your Spring Mixed Ultimate action!

Here are a few of the events on the horizon. A dozen in fact. There’s something on for any weekend you can spare. And according to those in the know, domestic air tickets have never been cheaper and car ownership is more widespread than ever. And given you can lower your costs through the fabulous Ultimate tradition of billeting, is there a better time to be getting out of your rut and trying a new tournament somewhere in Australia?

The Gong Classic (hosted by Wollongong Ultimate, naturally) is this weekend 27-28 July 2013, and has 9 teams registered, and a few look like they wouldn’t mind an extra player or two. Details.

The Big Wet is a one day hat tournament hosted annually by Ballarat Ultimate, and is set for 3 August 2013. Details.

Dodos Dos Dias returns for a second year on 10-11 August 2013. It is a two day teams event hosted by the Charles Sturt University Dodos in Wagga Wagga. Details.

Game of Throws (aka Farcical Foes) is the annual one day hat tournament hosted by Adelaide University on 10 August 2013. Details.

The B-Town Throwdown is the annual mixed teams shootout hosted by Ballarat Ultimate on 17-18 August 2013. Details.

The Not-So-Winter Solstice is the annual mixed teams one day shootout hosted by Hills Ultimate in Sydney on 18 August 2013. Details.

Halibut 17 is the 17th holding of the Queensland Mixed Ultimate Championships by QUDA, and will be held in Brisbane on 24-25 August. This tournament is the traditional start of the serious national Mixed Ultimate season, heading up to the Australian Mixed Ultimate Championships in October. 16 teams have already registered, but team registration closes on 1 August (many teams have room for more players though). Details.

The Cable Beach Hat is a dream tournament for many (its played on the World’s Best Beach), hosted by Broome Ultimate over the weekend of 31 August and 1 September. Details.

The NSW State Mixed Championships are set for 7-8 September 2013, at Castle Hill in Sydney. Note that team registration closed on 4 August! This is a big one, kids. Details. As well as fun, there will be qualification slots to Mixed Nationals on the line! Details.

The Victorian State Mixed Championships are also set for 7-8 September 2013, at a secret Victorian location. Details are TBC.

Lovefest is the University of Queensland Ultimate Lovers' annual mixed teams tournament, and always draws a crowd of sweaty, happy people. Its on 21 September 2013 in Brisbane. Details.

Finally, the Australian Mixed Ultimate Championships (aka AMUC) will be held in Canberra on 25-27 October 2013.

Which of the dozen look the tastiest to you? Perhaps you can recommend a tournament to our readers?

A tournament for every state (and ACT) except Tassie!
Two Hat will be in its 15th year this year. For anyone interested, it's on the 12th and 13th of October.

And if that ends to soon for you, there's New Zealand Mixed Nationals 15-17 November in Auckland. I know there's at least one team planning to go from Aus, and more people interested...
